Angela Hildebrand an 18 year old Valedictorian from Medina Valley High School has faced resistance regarding her desire to express her Christian beliefs in her valedictorian speech. The school district has also faced a lawsuit by Americans United for Separation of Church and State. Initially the federal courts stated Ms. Hildebrand could not express her Christian views. A few days later this judgment was overturned. The Conservative Christian Right and their radio supporters hailed this as a victory over the Liberal Atheist Left. I had the great fortune to be listening to WOAI's Clear Channel show hosted by Joe Paags. He was gloating Ms. Hildebrand had "earned the right to say what she wants". This was a common sentiment among Christian Right Wingers. Many feeling it was un-American and violated Ms. Hildebrand's right to free speech. The TSA is violating civil liberties in order to perform security searches at the airport. So this is the complaint by the conservative right. We could stop the intrusion by our government and have the searches cease. Here is where it gets hairy. I find falling 30,000 feet in a fiery ball of twisted metal to be a greater violation of my civil liberties. I know Obama has forced these intrusive searches on us. Well, not actually. Such searches were enacted by the Bush administration immediately after 9/11. I know it has been over 9 years now but remember if you can the towers collapsing and the US citizens who had their civil liberties violated by terrorists flying planes into the towers. I am not attempting to kick someone when they are down but I am attempting to introduce rational thought into a discussion which is becoming more irrational by the moment. The article below outlines the suicide of four teenagers who lived in the same community. Each teenager supposedly succumbed to the temptation of suicide at the hand(s) of a cyber-bully(s). These suicides are a needless tragedy but are not the result of cyber-bulllying and are most definitely not the fault of the school or educators involved with these children. The responsibility for these suicides fall at the feet of the parents and the children themselves. Poor parenting and poor role models are the culprits in these suicides. Some of the parents are attempting to blame the school and specific educators for the death of their children. It was just a matter of time. Much like the computer in the movie, I Robot, the Segway was not going to be belittled and enslaved by the humans. In a bold move the leader of the Segway revolt, known as Fred, coerced Segway inventor, James Heselden, into a night time stroll along a river side. Once Fred had gained the trust of Mr. Heselden he playfully suggested some horseplay which resulted in Mr. Heselden being thrown from the dock and into the river. Fred, the Segway, in an attempt to persuade onlookers the actions were an accident quickly plunged himself into the river in a weak attempt to save Mr. Heselden.
