THE GAY NFL: NOW THE NFL CAN PUT DRESSES ON THE QUARTERBACKS

Local San Antonio radio talk show host, Joe Pags, posted this ignorant and/or stupid comment on his FaceBook page:

"Let me be as direct as I can be. If there's nothing out of the ordinary for a person to be gay. If, in fact, acceptance and tolerance are the only allowable reactions -- then why exactly did ESPN lead with a mediocre football player being drafted? Why did they show him kissing his boyfriend after the call came in? Why did they focus on this man so much and not the other 200-some odd players drafted? If this is not big deal and we are not supposed to see any difference whatsoever, why is ESPN and the rest of the media sensationalizing this story? You're a sports network. You are NOT TMZ or Entertainment tonight. Tell me why, as a sports viewer, I should care about this player being drafted and how he will or will not help his new team. Period."

I decided to respond on my FaceBook page to his post and the ensuing thread it created:

This is about him being gay.... just like Rosa Parks was about her being black and Susan B. Anthony was about her being female. A door has been "opened" publicly which was not open before. Gay men no longer have to hide their lifestyle (in the NFL). This is a good thing. You may not be in favor of it or support it but it is a good thing. I saw numerous draftees kiss their girlfriends/wife/baby's momma after being drafted... I heard no complaints. Of course Sam's homosexuality makes a difference. Because you want to play ignorant and act as if this is not a problem in society does not make it so. Look at the  thread created by your post and many of the homophobic, puritanical, ignorant, Christian remarks. This is why it matters. It is about people not being treated as second or third class citizens any longer. The gay man in football will no longer have to enter through the back door (my counter remark to "forcing it down our throat.") I live in San Antonio.... I am disgusted when most heterosexual couples kiss in public. Charles Barkley was right! How do you feel when a man kisses the male hand of the Pope? Kinda gay.

     My 50+ years on this earth I've had many extraordinary experiences.  I've have taken advantage of everything America had to offer.  Early on, at the age of nineteen, I learned my first adult lessons about participation in the American way of life.  Regrettably, I learned sometimes America is not what it is portrayed to be.  I learned the American Dream is not necessarily the goal we chase but the way we retell the story of America.  Revisionist history is often the American Dream.  We long for the good old days, not when America was necessarily great but when we were young enough not to know any better.  Don't misunderstand me.  America has done some great things.  Technology and War are two of our greatest things.  But when you take a closer look at the "Greatness" of America you will find it was never great for all, and rarely great for most.      I am astonished how many Americans can preach the positive attributes of America while ignoring the glaring
